Examining The Threat Within

“Somewhere out there, someone has a reason to ‘attack’ your organisation, whether for possible financial gain, competitive espionage, ideological endeavour or single-issue extremism. What are you going to do to protect the company from such threats? Come along to the SMT Conference ‘The Threat Within’ and be aware.”

The words of Guy Mathias, associate director of UK security at Huntingdon Life Sciences, who is also a speaker at this special event being run by Security Management Today on behalf of corporate concerns at the Earls Court Conference Centre in London on Wednesday 5 December.

The KeyNote Speaker is commander Sharon Kerr of the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS), who leads on operational information, intelligence and learning as well as MPS vetting. She will be talking about Best Practice and how to leverage critical partnerships that will mitigate risks and drive down costs.

What is the internal threat, why do we face it and what are the crucial lessons that will help transform internal security strategies? These questions are tackled by Nick van der Bijl, Trust security manager at the North Bristol NHS Trust. The role of the security manager as the key intelligence officer for the organisation will frame Nick’s delivery on the day.

Just prior to the morning coffee break, Guy Mathias (winner of the Best Security Manager Award at the 2007 Security Excellence Awards) is due to discuss the implementation of rigorous pre-employment vetting to deliver the highest standards of safety and security. How will BS 7858:2006 enable you to meet due diligence requirements? How might you engage the Human Resources Department as a strategic partner for all employment vetting and screening initiatives you wish to undertake?

Next to the podium is Donna Alexander, personnel protection manager in the group security section at Barclays Bank. Donna is going to talk about an ongoing employment vetting strategy that will eliminate potential internal threats. The contentious issues of ongoing employment vetting at senior director level and how to identify alternative (and better) screening methods are on Donna’s agenda.

Barrister Adrian Maxwell then examines the detection of fraud before Alan Day (senior audit and investigations manager at Transport for London) looks at working in partnership with employees to manage the risk of fraud.

Dan Hooton – group security advisor (operations) at the Prudential – is tasked with outlining the creation of a security-conscious enterprise and ensuring that employees are not the victims of social engineering.

It’s then the turn of Don Randall MBE (senior vice-president at JP Morgan) to describe how security procedures can be reviewed, how to develop sound polices and adhere to strict guidelines. John Scott (head of security at the Post Office) ends the presentations by discussing effective whistle blowing strategies.

The day concludes with a Panel discussion on how to devise a solid framework to monitor and manage your company’s security effectiveness, and then an in-depth Q&A session.
