Fire safer cigarettes: European standard published
A new European standard for fire safer cigarettes that extinguish themselves has been published by CEN.
Fire safety requirements for what are termed reduced ignition propensity cigarettes are now covered by EN 16156 Cigarettes – Assessment of the ignition propensity. The standard complements another published in September, ISO 12863 Standard test method for assessing the ignition propensity for cigarettes.
Reduced ignition propensity cigarettes are designed to stop burning through their whole length when not being actively smoked.
The standards may be in force across the EU as early as November 2011.
