G4S pilots electronic prisoner monitoring in Austria
Under the new scheme, day-release prisoners from the Vienna-Simmering and Graz-Jakomini Prisons will exchange their cells for electronically supervised house arrest.
This sentencing option is part of a detention discharge package developed by Austria’s Minister of Justice, Dr. Maria Berger, and will serve as a replacement for short-term sentences.
G4S’s EM International division will handle the pilot and will provide the equipment, monitoring system, support and training. The Austrian Ministry of Justice will manage the installation and recovery of equipment and response to any violations.
“We are delighted to have been awarded this prestigious project which we believe will provide a viable alternative to imprisonment to the Austrian Government,” said Julian McGovern, G4S EM International Director.
G4S has previously implemented electronic monitoring programmes in the UK, US, France, Netherlands, Israel and New Zealand.
