Honeywell have been awarded a £13.2 million contract to provide a fire alarm system at Heathrow Terminal 2, as part of a £1 billion refurbishment.

The integrated system which also manages the public address and voice alarm systems, along with lighting controls and building management systems, was chosen following a similar installation in Heathrow’s Terminal 5.

That particular installation remains the largest of its kind installed in the world to date.

Honeywell’s integrated system enables “smart evacuation” procedures where clear voice alarm messages are broadcast by loudspeaker only to affected areas, ensuring a controlled evacuation in an emergency.

This same system will also be used to announce live flight information and other non-emergency communications.

The terminal has been designed to utilise natural light in order to save energy, and Honeywell’s system will also be in charge of managing the lighting levels throughout the building.

Daniel Garcia-Bernalt, project leader for the main contractor at Heathrow said, “Honeywell demonstrated that it has the project management and delivery expertise to implement a project of this size and scope. The innovative technology fulfils the safety requirements and passenger expectations of a modern airport, while maximising operational performance to enable efficient energy use and achieve substantial carbon savings.”

The terminal will open in 2014 and will service an estimated 20 million passengers a year.
