Historical home of Wordsworth devastated in roof blaze
The historical home of William Wordsworth has been severely damaged in a serious roof fire.
Fire devastated the roof and first floor of two-storey Allen Bank, in Grasmere on 23 March. The property, which overlooks Grasmere Lake, in Cumbria, was built in the early 1800s.
Around 30 firefighters attended the blaze, after the alert was raised at 1.37 am.
It took crews around six hours to battle the fire, which was finally out just before 7 am.
The property is National Trust-owned but privately rented. The poet William Wordsworth lived there with his family from 1808 to 1811.
A spokesman from the trust told the Westmorland Gazette : “Unfortunately the house has been substantially damaged by the fire.
"Parts of the floor have been destroyed and inside the property is blackened with soot. Objects were thrown out of the house during the blaze by the fire brigade to stop the fire spreading.
It is thought the fire was caused by an electrical fault in the roof. The building is made of traditional stone and cement mortar, with a slate and timber roof.
