Whitepaper: Enhancing security, resilience and efficiency across a range of industries

Keeping ahead of the rest on standards

Throughout 2002 the SSIAB will be holding free workshops intended to make firms aware of the requirements of DD 243: 2002 covering confirmed alarms. The inspectorate is also holding a series of training dates on installing to European Standards.
Non-SSAIB companies are welcome at the events which are also supported by BT RedCARE.
In a letter to its inspected companies, the SSAIB explains that in January the BSI published a new version of DD 243. This allows certain concessions principally relating to the overlapping of fields of cover of movement detectors.
“DD 243 includes radical changes to certain aspects of the design of alarms systems, particularly setting and unsetting procedures.”
Until July both the 1999 and 2002 versions of DD 243 will be available and, in principle, installers are free to decide which version to use. But, says the SSAIB,”in reality, the equipment necessary to install alarm systems in compliance with DD 243: 2002 will not be available until July, making it impossible to use that standard until then.
“Our Workshops will explain the requirements of DD 243: 2002 and how to ensure your alarm systems meet the new standard. Designing an alarm system to generate a confirmed alarm, without compromising the detection of intruders, requires a clear understanding of the principles underlying the requirement specified in the standard. The workshops are intended to provide an understanding of the issues confronting installers whilst the training sessions are intended to provide installers with sufficient knowledge to install confirmed alarms systems with confidence.
“Insurers are particularly concerned that alarm systems, designed to generate confirmed alarms, may compromise the security the system is intended to provide. To address the concerns of insurers it is important that all SSAIB recognised firms attend the free workshops and preferably the associated training sessions.”
The Training days, associated with the workshops, cost GB pound 20 per attendee. All attendees will receive a Training Certificate as evidence of attendance that will contribute to an NVQ.
