Whitepaper: Enhancing security, resilience and efficiency across a range of industries

Learning zone

Six SSAIB Apprentices received their Level 2 NVQ completion certificates, at a Guildhall presentation organised by Inner London Training, for London and Home Counties.
The apprentices, who are now moving on to their Level 3 NVQ’s were presented with their awards by Sanjeeve Bhasker, best known for writing and starring in the award winning television series “Goodness Gracious Me”.
As well as presenting the awards he gave everyone a good laugh, and stayed for photographs at the close of the presentation.
Chairman of ILT, Alf Froggitt, welcomed the apprentices. He said: “In this age where training and continuous development is so important to the future of British business, it is very satisfying that so many trainees have gained qualifications and certificates”.
David Exley, ILT board member who closed the evening, said he had been involved in work-based training at the beginning of his career as an electrician.
Now a Facilities Manager for one of the world’s largest law firms, he said: “I could not believe how far my City & Guilds Certificate has taken me. I was now sitting down with executives, architects and consultants for Canary Wharf telling them what I expect of the new 31 storey building they are constructing for us.”
This is the second year that the SSAIB has taken part in the ceremony.
“This year’s ceremony was very exciting and shows the increasing interest of SSAIB companies in training and qualifications” said Trevor Jenks, Training Manager for the SSAIB.

Celebrating MA success
Clarkson Evans, the Gloucester-based electrical contractor, is celebrating after winning a coveted National Training Award for its Modern Apprenticeship Training Programme. The company received one of just eleven Special Awards presented by the Rt Hon Estelle Morris MP, Secretary of State for Education and Skills, at a ceremony in London.
The company, which celebrates its 21st birthday in May, set up the Training Centre in 1998, employing a lecturer and gaining necessary approvals from City & Guilds and the JIB (Joint Industries Board). By recruiting and training young people to follow an Advanced Modern Apprenticeship the company was able to employ more electricians, increase its customer base and turnover.
Director, Gerald Crittle said: “We are delighted that we have been recognised nationally for our training programme. We now have a training team of six and winning the award gives us the encouragement to continue the development of training, both for our employees and as an external training provider.”
Clarkson Evans now provides training for 25 SITO (Security Industry Training Organisation) apprentices and offers City & Guilds courses to external electricians.

First for training
In what is being described as a ‘significant development’ and part of a ‘major investment programme for the business’, First Security has announced plans to open a new training facility, Caledonia House, for its 2000 security officers in London. Situated close to its existing headquarters in London ECI, the new training facility in Pentonville Road has been designed specifically for the purpose.
The new offices will also provide sector-specific training (retail and health & safety) and refresher courses for all security officers, as well as further advanced training on issues such as managing violence.

Access control training
CPD training in access control accredited by the Construction CPD Certification Service is now available from PAC International, leading UK manufacturer of electronic access control and alarm management systems.

Exploit structured
With the structured cabling market now said to be expanding ahead of the security market in the UK, Gardiner Security is offering an authorised training programme for installers.
The course is organised by Gardiner’s recently formed Integrated Systems Division, whose portfolio includes structured cabling, home automation and networking products.
Courses have been designed especially for professional installers looking to exploit the wider opportunities or offer data and networking installations as part of their overall service.
Much commercial new build property is now flood-wired with Cat 5, meaning installers can supplement their business by connecting into the network.
The one-day course includes commercial and residential installations and is available at any one of ten Gardiner Security regional training centres throughout the UK, including Northern Ireland.
Courses include (for Conectis installer training): Network theory; Standards; Cable and components; Installation practice, Hands-on instruction and Testing.
Courses include (for Ortronics residential installer training): Market trends; Product overview; Standards; Installation; Termination requirements; Testing and Warranty.

On line learning opportunities
SITO has joined forces with the University for Industry (UfI) to pilot a number of on-line training courses for the security industry.
Twenty eight courses have been selected through consultation with industry, including IT, Management and Business, Customer Service, Health and Safety, and Equal Opportunities. Courses start at beginner level through to advanced and range from just 45 minutes duration to 40 hours.
The three-month pilot has ben running from February.

Broadening the scope of courses by offering generic skills training, and also providing an alternative delivery method is expected to increase the knowledge base and competencies within the security industry.
This will include not only the security officers and engineers, but administration and office based staff as well.
Employees will be able to study on-site, at the office or home (internet access required), they can control the learning pace, and many will feel more comfortable out of the traditional classroom environment.
