Whitepaper: Enhancing security, resilience and efficiency across a range of industries

New management structure at The Security Institute

David Gill MSyI continues his existing role as vice-chairman, and will now be concentrating on the business side of the Institute. In this respect, David will be directing all commercial issues, supporting marketing, recruitment, mentoring and events.

Gill has served the Institute as vice-chairman since 2007, and is the founder of Linx International (a specialist security and risk management consultancy). At present, he’s also working on the final stages of his Masters degree in security Management with Loughborough University.

Profile of the new vice-chairman

Also appointed as vice-chairman of the Institute is Doug Cook MBE FSyI, who moves from his previous position as the Validation Board chairman. Doug is currently international security vice-president for Deutsche Telekom AG, and has been a director of the Institute since January 2004.

In establishing this new role, the Institute is placing a much higher emphasis on its work in raising standards, lobbying and sharing Best Practice ideas as well as the continuing work of the Academic and Validation Boards.

Together, David and Doug will be supporting new chairman Mike Bluestone in formulating overall strategy.

Plethora of new appointments

The following appointments were also agreed, where each director now has a specific area of responsibility…

Nigel Churton continues as company secretary, but also assumes responsibility for financial management and controls.

Emma Shaw moves from registrar to chairman of the Validation Board, and continues to work with the Validation Board members to process all applications for membership.

David Cresswell becomes the director responsible for standards, including Best Practice Guides and security Special Interest Groups. This is a huge task, and David will be looking to co-ordinate a team of specialist volunteers over the coming months to take this forward.

Chairman of the Academic Board

Mark Button continues as chairman of the Academic Board, working with his committee to enhance the professionalism of security management and provide a link between The Security Institute and Higher Education Institutions as well as appropriate training providers.

Mark’s committee will be strengthened by Joe Greenan, who assumes responsibility for Institute qualifications and the Distance Learning Programme. Joe will also look after ethical issues, and cover any legal matters that may arise.

Martin Smith will be co-ordinating marketing and communications, while also overseeing the Institute’s events programme with the help of the Events Team. Members of that team will work closely with the Recruitment Team.

Maria Cox is now responsible for the mentoring programme, and will be contacting all the members who previously expressed an interest in this area. Maria is also passionate about student membership, and will be supporting this area of the business, too.

Special Projects and Chartered status

Looking ahead, Azeem Aleem is ideally placed to provide research into Special Projects, while Ken Livingstone will be focusing on the Institute’s long-term plans for Chartered status.

The Security Institute is managed by a team of 12 voluntary directors, each appointed by membership election for a period of three years. The chairman is one of the twelve directors, and is appointed by the remaining eleven members of the Board, who also make a number of other appointments including vice-chairman, chairman of the Validation Board and chairman of the Academic Board.

e-mail addresses for all directors are posted on the Institute’s web site should you wish to contact them (a dedicated link is provided on the right hand panel pf this page)
