Nuclear power station fire

Hinkley Point B nuclear power station was involved in a “small fire” last Wednesday 16 May as lagging in the gas turbine house caught fire.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service were called but the power station’s own fire response team were mobilised and had the fire extinguished before the fire service arrived.

Speaking with the BBC, an EDF Energy spokesperson said that there were no injuries to any personnel, and that the cause of the fire was yet to be established.

"There has been no impact on operational activity at the power station, which continues to safely generate electricity,” he said.

The cause of the fire is unknown and a spokesperson was unavailable to comment yesterday.
