Whitepaper: Enhancing security, resilience and efficiency across a range of industries

On the case: February 2002

Ace covers all bases
Bromley-based Ace Security has installed a range of products from FAAC (UK) at a number of sites requiring 24 hour access control. Its solution is to install a new automatic gate and barrier system combined with sophisticated access control. Following a comprehensive review of access control for a scaffolding company which handles a number of out-of-hours deliveries from its three sites, Ace Security installed new gates with FAAC automation at one of the sites and fitted FAAC operators to the existing gates at the other two sites. Each site also benefits from a video entry system and CCTV linked to the 24-hour control room at Ace Security’s sister company, Bridge CCTV.
At two of the sites, FAAC 400 swing gate operators were used, with magnetic locks for automatic locking and anti-crushing capabilities. They give high levels of safety and security and are suitable for commercial and industrial gates with a maximum of 7m per leaf. At a third site, a three-phase model 884 sliding gate operator has been installed. It has an electronic anti-crushing device that adjusts the drive torque directly, and maintenance has been reduced and made easier by the ability to access the operator without removing the gate.

Historic estate protected The Closed Circuit Television Company has installed an extensive CCTV system at the Guinness Estate in Chelsea. The installation uses Philips G3 AutoDome cameras and a System 4 video management system supplied by S&I Industrial.
The system was required to combat extensive vandalism on the historic Chelsea site, which is one of the Guinness Trust’s flagship sites. The Trust was faced with local youths arriving on stolen motorbikes and setting fire to them, so they decided to install a high quality, unobtrusive CCTV system.
The site is constantly monitored by security and logistics managers on the estate. The installation of low-light cameras around the estate and the video management system offers Triplex operation, as well as a multi-screen display of live views and simultaneous playback. The unit benefits from a timed events feature and a custom alarm display with multiple pre-sets. It also gives full duplex VCR controls with on-line status and time/date/search features.

United system Tyco Integrated Systems has installed a total safety infrastructure system at Oxford United Stadium comprising distributed TV systems using 24 cameras, access control, Scangate system, emergency telephone, fire alarm, public address and voice alarm systems.
The camera network consists of 20 speed dome cameras and 4 fixed cameras both within the stadium and covering all approaches to the stadium and car park. The stadium holds 12,573 supporters and the car park holds 1,160 cars. According to Tony Ashley, safety officer and stadium manager at Oxford United FC, the CCTV system provides coverage for both security and safety reasons, with two part-time operators manning the system during football matches.

Discreet surveillance
Still Frame, a Sony SAIF Installer company, has completed the installation of a series of Sony mini dome cameras at two of the latest Allders Home Stores in Sheffield and Watford. Nine internal non-ruggedised Sony SSC-CD33VP colour mini fixed dome cameras have been installed at the store within Sheffield’s Meadowhall shopping complex, and a further nine cameras have been fitted at the Charter Place store in Watford.
The cameras are linked to a central control unit within each store giving full recording facilities of all activities within the stores. According to Philip Moore, group security consultant at the store, the installation has already proved successful in detecting a number of suspects involved in shoplifting.
Swing while you’re winning
A decade after Gate-A-Mation installed swing gate operators from FAAC (UK) at Chancel House in Neasden, in London, the gates are still proving reliable in operation. Installed in 1991 to improve security at the car park to the rear of Chancel House, entry is gained via a single-leaf gate while vehicles exit through double-leaf gates. The gates are kept shut at all times and access is controlled using proximity reader cards.
Gate-A-Mation specified FAAC 400 swing gate hydraulic operators, which have a maximum width of 7m per leaf. The 400 range can be set to automate heavy, industrial or light traffic flows. It is said to combine powerful performance with reliability and the highest level of safety and security. Gate leaves up to 2.2m are available with internal high-strength lock systems. Thereafter, supplementary locks can be fitted to protect against forced entry.
Scottish upgrade
ADT Fire and Security has completed a GB pound 150,000 security upgrade at the Scottish Office in Edinburgh. ADT won the contract, which was part of a four-stage renovation programme, from builders HGB construction.
A range of security systems including CCTV and access control have been installed to improve the safety of staff and the general security of the office.
Ken Scotland, general manager for ADT’s Edinburgh branch said the system installed at the Scot-tish Office utilises the finest available technology to ensure the safety of employees and visitors to the site, as well as keep equipment secure.
ADT was also required to fit in with the scheduling demands of the renovation programme, since the project was running six months ahead of schedule, helping HGB Construction with the prospect of finishing the two-year contract six months early.
Cracking car crime
Computer and Digital Security Systems Limited of Pontypridd have installed cameras with powerful Pentax zoom lenses at several car parks dotted along five miles of Swansea’s foreshore.
Nine Pentax 12-240mm and five 10-140mm zoom cameras have been fitted in the car parks to prevent the high rates of car crime that have occurred at several inner cities in the UK. Captured images are fed back to a monitoring station run by Swansea City and County Council within the city centre.

Innovative system
Intruder alarm and CCTV specialist, AGS Security, has installed Remsdaq’s SabreFonic perimeter intrusion detection system at St Oswald’s Church in Backford, near Chester, to protect the church’s historic stained glass windows.
The SabreFonic system employs a continuously-monitored fibre optic sensor cable, which is sensitive to vibration, flexing and compression. The sensors are being used on monitoring grilles, protecting the stained glass windows. SabreFonic’s use of laser light transmission means that it does not radiate signals and is not affected by electrical interference. The Remsdaq equipment has been used to form part of a continuous link through the external window grilles. If they are removed, or interfered with causing vibration, a signal is sent from a dual com radio link to a central station. The information is then passed to Cheshire police and local keyholders and the incident is actioned accordingly.

Joint project
Local company Powersafe Security Systems was called in to install a total of 16 Sony CCTV cameras at an oil refinery in South Wales, while fellow SAIF dealer Touchstone Electronics, based in Oxford, handled the specialist requirements of the fibre optic links within the system. Altogether 13 static Sony SSC-DC330P Exwave high resolution colour cameras were installed in the steam plant, monitoring the boiler valves and vaporizers for possible leaks. Externally, a single Sony-DC58AP static camera was installed to monitor the colour of the smoke emitted from two smoke stacks.
Two other fully functional Exwave SSC-DC330P cameras were located to monitor certain external areas of the site. Touchstone Electronics were called in to work on the fibre optic links to the bank of five Sony SSM-20N5E colour monitors in the control room.
Tony Edwards, managing director of Powersafe Security, said: “This refinery installation is a classic example of how effectively the Sony SAIF network operates within the UK.” All systems go
Nottingham-based Central Security Systems installed a four PTZ camera system in Syston in Leicestershire to alleviate a police manpower crisis. The small CCTV system was put in place after local shopkeepers complained about the lack of police presence on the streets.
The system is monitored from a control room at a local shopping mall. Charnwood Borough Council member Tony Noon, was instrumental in getting the system up and running, to give residents the peace of mind they needed.

Top of the class
UK Watch Limited of Dudley has installed a 16-camera Digital Sprite Lite with networking using the existing computer network at Smallheath Secondary School in Birmingham. Images can now be viewed from any networked PC ensuring coverage around the school.
The key objective was to have a system that would record without the hassle of continually changing videotapes. Dedicated Micros’ Digital Sprite Lite is an easy-to-use and install package bringing together digital video mutiplexing, recording and network video transmission.
The Digital Sprite Lite combines instant access hard disk storage, integrated telemetry control of JVC, Ultrak, Diamond and VCL domes and multiple user network viewing in one package.

Surveillance on the golf range
Reflex Systems Ltd, a Panasonic Premier Installer, has installed a GB pound 30,000 integrated security system at the World of Golf. The Panasonic CCTV system, coupled with access control, has been installed to provide visual monitoring and multiple camera recording functions of the centre’s two-tier 72 bay driving range, short game area, car park, perimeter, ‘Tap-in’ bar and restaurant and reception area.
A mix of WV-CS850 fully functional and WVCF202 fixed mini domes, supported by WV-CP234 static, 480 TV line resolution colour cameras have been used. A 16 channel multiplexer with two time-lapse VCRs, programmed to operate in real-time mode, gives archiving and play-back review of camera images.
A 15 inch colour monitor has been sited in the manager’s office, and a flat screen slave monitor is installed in the public reception area.
Around the main building, external dome cameras with pre-set positioning are linked to the intruder alarm system to remotely monitor the fire exit doors.
