Whitepaper: Enhancing security, resilience and efficiency across a range of industries

On the Case: October 2001

<b>Estate has peace of mind</b>
Perimeter security is protecting a new estate in a depressed area of East London with an innovative solution centred around the latest CCTV and surveillance technology.
Petty vandalism, graffiti and anti-social behaviour has long been an issue on Wick Village Tenant Co-operative in Hackney Wick.
Now Perimeter has provided a CCTV solution combined with a “personal approach” that did not alienate the residents themselves.
Eight external cameras with Panasonic digital recording overlooking main external areas and car parks were installed. Since then vandalism has decreased dramatically.
Plans are under consideration to introduce similar Perimeter systems across all adjacent sites.

<b>Hospital staff protected</b>
Geedee Systems, based in the South West, has installed a comprehensive dual technology staff attack alarm system for the Meadowfield Hospital, Worthing.
The system also provides an integrated patient call facility together with door monitoring alarms and combines paged messaging for both the staff and fire alarm systems.
The system is built upon the latest version of Visonetics Spider Alert Signalling Network. This dual technology – radio plus infrared – approach enables mobile trigger devices to operate out of doors and within the building. All locations are covered in the building and surrounding grounds. PC based software alerts staff instantly to patient call and staff attack alarms.
<b>Motoring with FAAC!</b>
FAAC sliding gates and barriers have been installed at MSX International Limited’s new design and engineering centre in Basildon (pictured bottom of page).
MSX is a leader in design research for the motor industry. As part of stringent security measures, two automatic cantilevered sliding gates, each with an automatic barrier behind it, were required for the front entrance.
Link CCTV, who designed and installed the CCTV system, called in City Gate Automation of Shepperton, to carry out the work.
City gate specified the FAAC 640 barrier with the 844 operator for the sliding gates.
The 844 is suitable for gates with a maximum length of 19m and a maximum weight of 1800kg. It has an anti-crushing device, power failure override and automatic locking as well as inductive limit switch and partial opening capability.
The electro hydraulic FAAC 640 barrier is designed for heavy traffic management and large commercial applications. It is suitable for beam lengths from 4m to 7m and has operating speeds of between four and eight seconds. Bottom skirts can be fitted up to 7m in length and top and bottom skirts up to 5m. Anti crush safety is ensured by a pair of bypass valves.

<b>Lab opts for Kollector</b>
ADT at Hemel Hempstead) has installed a digital security station at Oxford University’s Physical Chemistry Department (pictured above ).
The Vicon Kollector digital security station is being used for general surveillance of entrances, fire exit and internal doors on a nine-camera system.
ADT installed the unit after demonstrations by Vicon technical staff. Facilities managers at the lab were anxious to avoid the problems inherent in tape storage and a digital archiving system was appealing.
The Kollector stores video on a 45Gb hard drive. Live or recorded images are viewed through a PC monitor.

<b>Electrifying results</b>
Harper Chalice Group Limited has installed a PulseSecure electrified perimeter security system at a warehouse site in Birmingham which was hit by an average of four crimes every week – including raids on the offices, theft of vehicles and stock and vandalism.
Previous security measures at the Jeavons Eurotir warehouse site included high security fencing, a monitored alarm system, remotely monitored CCTV and nightly patrols but none had proved effective in stopping the attacks.
But since the installation of the PulseSecure, which delivers a sharp and painful (but safe) shock, not one crime has occurred at the site.
Harper Chalice says flexibility and ease of installation make it a viable option where electric fences were previously not an option.
Jeavons Eurotir’s MD, Darren Jeavons, said even professional criminals had been defeated by it: “I cannot recommend this security system highly enough. After the initial installation it has easily paid for itself.”<b>Worldwide monitoring</b>
Glasgow-based installer McDougal Systems has helped global electronics and communications specialists Agilent Technologies streamline their security operations in the UK at South Queensferry and Dunfermline.
When Agilent was looking to update their security system, they required a solution that provided full coverage – not just of the site but also one which could be monitored from other sites around the globe.
Glasgow-based installer McDougal Systems recommended System Sprite together with V-serve 100 from Dedicated Micros.
Said Gordon Hayes, Technical Sales Manager at McDougal Systems: “In the first instance Agilent was looking for a high specification, high technology CCTV surveillance system to monitor two UK sites … In the long term, the system would need to offer upgrade capability to interface with worldwide CCTV monitoring applications from one central monitoring station.” DM’s System Sprite for alarm and camera control was linked via V-serve to allow image distribution across Agilent’s PC network.
V-serve is a network video server range that allows multiplexed video signals to be quickly and easily streamed over a standard computer network to a user’s desktop PC.
A variety of systems can be created with the three System Sprite ‘building blocks’: keyboard, multiplexer and monitor switcher. This enables two, three or more individual control points to have shared viewing, recording and control of any number of cameras, so users can extend the capability of their system without having to invest in a matrix system.
McDougal Systems recommended three System Sprites to control ten high speed domes and seven fixed cameras. A building access control system routes alarms via the Dedicated Micros C-bus network, triggering preset camera positions to view the alarmed door.
Martin Izatt, Engineering Manager at Agilent said: “We worked closely with McDougal Systems from the outset and have been delighted with the results from the System Sprite equipment they recommended.”<b>Tough entry gate </b>
An advanced Bekamatic sliding gate from Bekaert has been installed at a new police firearms training centre at Eaglescliffe near Stockton-on-Tees.
The new police centre is believed to be the most advanced firearms training establishment in the world and provides the most modern training and services available.
ProNet contractor Dinnington Fencing of Newcastle Upon Tyne carried out the work which, in addition to the gate, involves 640 meters of Bekaert Paladin Fencing around the site perimeter plus two Robusta swing gates and three pedestrian gates.
The Bekamatic gate suits main entrances and other entry points where a high quality barrier system is needed. Suitable for openings up to nine meters, it comes to site on special transport and is ready assembled for installation on to pre-prepared tracks.
The gates are double corrosion protected. The motor is integrated into the underbeam and all electronics and running gear are fully concealed and protected.

<b>Safe eye on services</b>
ADT has specified and installed A CCTV system at First Motorway Services on Junction 24 of the M5 near Bridgewater.
CCTV equipment supplied by Panasonic is used in two independent systems. The first covers a 29 bedroom lodge and service area and uses Panasonic 1/3 inch CCD, WV-CP230 480 TV line resolution cameras to provide accurate colour imaging through a range of varying light conditions. The system has already proven itself: Videotapes recorded via a Panasonic WJ-FS216 16-channel multiplexer were used to successfully defend an insurance claim made by a woman who had slipped on a wet floor during cleaning. The allegation that no warning signs were in place was disproven by video evidence from the 31-day library. In another incident clear images were used to identify a gang of youths who had broken into slot machines.
In the second system at the service’s petrol station, Panasonic WV-CP230 and WV-CL830 1/2 inch FIT cameras provide round the clock surveillance in the shop, cash tills and fuel pumps. FIT cameras linked to a WJ-FS216 multiplexer provide detailed colour images and have low vertical smear to capture number plates of all departing vehicles and prevent “drive offs”.
<b>Prestigious gates</b>
Architect designed gates manufactured and installed by Ironcraft Steel Fabrications and employing automation from Slough-based Atlas Group have improved security at an exclusive villa on the outskirts of Glasgow.
The gates use Atlas underground automators with activation controlled by radio frequency transmitters. To complete the installation Atlas safety photocells were installed along with an intercom system and free exit induction loop.
Ironcraft’s Jim McLernon said the company won the contract because of its acknowledged expertise in handling prestigious automated gate installations: “Installation of the gates and Atlas automation system was problem free. I am confident they will perform reliably for years.”<b>Private gardens</b>
Intellikey has been fitted to five entrance gateways to communal gardens at an exclusive London square.
The square is made up of stucco-fronted terraces dating from the Regency period and many of the properties are used as embassies and institute headquarters as well as private flats and houses which use the gardens as a communal area.
To ensure residents, including film actors, diplomats and business people have access to the gardens, Intellikey Gate Locks were installed.
They bring the benefits of the standard Intellikey system such as stand alone operation, audit trail and access control by user, time, date and location to swing gates. The Gate Lock is operated by a standard intelligent key, allowing it to be added to an existing Intellikey system or to provide a secure alternative to padlocks or site perimeters.
There is no requirement for mains power supply or data cabling, said to offer significant cost savings combined with high security locking.

<b>Surf’s up for Intrepid</b>
Intrepid Security has designed and installed new security systems at the recently completed Legends Surf Shop stores in Oxford Street, Croydon and Brighton.
Norbain SD Ltd provided the products for Intrepid including a total of 35 Vista NCL634 colour cameras said to be ideal for varied lighting conditions and have advanced Digital Signal Processing (DSP).
Images are relayed to monitors at the counterpoints (pictured above) via a Vista VLM16CD multiplexer, which shows 16 channels in colour and has a duplex facility enabling multi screen images to be shown while multiplex recording. Images are controlled by staff using Baxall switchers at the counterpoints.
<b>Travellers deterred</b>
Frontier Pitts has carried out an extensive security refurbishment project designed to improve site access and enhance residents’ safety at Woodman Mews in Wormwood Scrubs, west London.
The site forms part of the Scrubs Trust and features a large area of undeveloped land that is subject to incursion by travellers.
Frontier Pitts supplied and installed a heavy duty Roadblocker with traffic lights and control cabinet across one of the site’s main access roads linked to the CCTV control system.
Operated by a TelGuard control unit, the Roadblocker ensures access is restricted to authorised users and forms part of a wider 24 hour CCTV monitoring scheme.

<b>Stations monitored</b>
Kent based Optyma Security has installed cameras and multiplexers supplied by S & I Industrial at 100 British rail stations.
Supplied were Sony DC54 low light cameras and Tecton multiplexers as well as Canon 4-10mm varifocal lenses and telemetry and vandal resistant housings from Conway Security. The telemetry is from Conway’s Omega range and the vandal resistant housings are the EHW4 model.
Images are monitored by British Rail staff via fibre optic links.

<b>Designs on security</b>
ADT has installed a wide ranging security system to the McArthur Glen Designer Outlet in Livingston, a prestigious new retail development.
In the GB pound 1.1m investment in security, ADT installed CCTV, access control, public address and fire alarm and evacuation systems.
The development has more than 100 well known brands under one roof with restaurants, a cinema and 1,800 parking spaces.
‘Mission control’ room Videcom Security Ltd of Waltham Abbey installed CCTV monitors in a new control room said to be one of the most impressive in the country.
Southend on Sea Borough Council’s CCTV control room has 75 JVC monitors ranging from 29 inch “grandstand” models to desk-mounted ten inch screens.
“People do think it’s like mission control when they come in here for the first time,” said Paul Croft, who oversees the CCTV operation with Andy Tait.
Since the system went live crime has been reduced by 30 per cent.
The control room is sited at an underground location near the city centre.

<b>Perimeter system</b>
A radioactive waste yard near Budapest is being protected by an intruder detection system from Remsdaq.
The Sabre II fibre optic Perimeter Intrusion Detection System from Deeside based Remsdaq employs a continuously monitored sensor cable which is sensitive to vibration, flexing and compression.
The waste treatment facility consist of concrete vaults and steel lined wells.
Only when a disturbance exceeds pre-set conditions is an alarm generated, ensuring the highest probability of detection with the minimum of nuisance alarms.

<b>Upgrade on the record</b>
Tates Security Services has upgraded the CCTV system at the Nissan manufacturing plant in Sunderland.
The plant employs 4,600 staff and needed an easy to operate, reliable system to record images over long periods outside office hours only.
Tates chose the Vista Columbus to replace the hard disk recorder it had installed 18 months ago as part of a 16-static camera system which was said to be difficult to operate.
Columbus allows retrieval of images in seconds using push button controls and Windows pull down menus.

<b>Diana’s playground protected</b>
ADT’s City of London branch has installed hi-tech security measures to protect the Princess of Wales Memorial Playground in Kensington Gardens.
Security equipment sympathetic to the environment is monitored by playground attendants following training by ADT.
Installed were motion detectors, multi directional CCTV and state of the art access control.
Supervisors now have complete control of security operations with all visitors having to announce themselves before entering.
Said Albert Padoin, Sales Manager at ADT’s City of London branch: “We feel we have managed to balance the need for security without giving the playground the feel of a high security zone.” <b>Visitors ‘on the line'</b>
Capital Vision has installed nine TelGuard telephone entry systems at the South Bank, London. The original GLC building has now been extended to include new east and west blocks.
The TelGuard systems are installed at entrances to each of the residential blocks and at the communal car park entrance, providing communication with each resident or the 24-hour concierge via the telephone network. Residents are also able to view visitors on a pre-set TV channel. All that is needed for the system to operate is a telephone point and a power supply.

<b>Dome’s master stroke </b>
Hi-tech equipment and video techniques are helping to coach England’s cricketers at the Cricket School of Excellence based at Trent Bridge, Nottingham.
Installers, TIS (Mansfield) Ltd were called in to design a system which would be able to scrutinise batting and bowling in minute detail. They opted to install dome cameras as the best solution to the cricket school’s needs.
A total of seven TK-C675BE dome cameras – more often used for crime prevention – were installed in the two indoor halls. They provide close up images of players’ batting techniques.
A fixed JVC camera at the bowler’s end captures a side-on view of the delivery stride. Said David Terrill, Facilities Manager: There’s no doubt that video recordings of the players in action helps the younger players with their game although it has to be said that the more established older players don’t seem to need the detailed analysis of their stroke play or bowling technique.” <b>Classical upgrade </b>
Langs Hotel, Glasgow has installed the Classic security system from Dom-Nemef-Corbin UK, part of the Black & Decker Group, to all its 103 bedroom doors.
The work was specified and supplied by architectural ironmonger, Fyfe Douglas of Dundee.
Nemef’s Classic is primarily designed for hotels, colleges and hostels where there is high occupancy change. It is based on a programmable key card which can be programmed to include time-sensitive validity for guests or variable access for special purposes. The card is held up to the proximity door reader or there is an optional swipe function.
