A Royal Air Force radar museum in Norfolk is to reopen following extensive updates to its fire safety systems and procedures.
RAF Air Defence Radar Museum given extensive fire safety upgrades
A building that was once used to secretly house radar operations during WWII and the Cold War, in Neatishead, Norfolk, has been fitted with 30-plus fire extinguishers and additional fire detectors to bring it up-to-date with the Fire Safety Order.
It was forced to close in August last year following concerns over fire safety and the costs of updating a fire safety system that dated back to 1941.
RAF Air Defence Radar Museum, which is a registered charity, is in the process of buying the building from the Ministry of Defence. The charity and its friends managed to raise a significant amount for the works, according to manager Chris Morshead.
“The museum needed a fairly major overhaul and so closed in August while an appeal was launched,” Mr Morshead told info4fire.
The upgrade, which was carried out by Norwich-based Fire Safety Services, also included sounders and an additional fire escape may be fitted to another part of the building if that area is also made public.
Fire Management Solutions assessed the building for fire safety before works were carried out and also once they were completed.
Mr Morshead praised both companies for their support over the past year. “Both have been a huge support to the museum and were excellent,” he said.
Since then, the museum has appointed several of its employees to act as fire safety marshals and has updated its evacuation and training procedures to bring it in line with the FSO.
The museum is set to open its doors to the public on 5 April.
