SIA pays visits to ‘high-risk’ companies

Twenty ‘high-risk’ companies the SIA thinks will be unable to supply sufficient licensed staff following the shake up were visited last week and warned of the implications of non-compliance.

Senior employees, including company directors, were asked to read and sign a compliance notice, acknowledging that they understood the terms of the Private Security Industry Act 2001, their obligations under the Act, and the consequences of not complying with the law.

Jennifer Pattinson, SIA Head of Investigation for Scotland said the companies cannot now plead ignorance if they are caught supplying unlicensed staff.

“Security companies have been aware that SIA licensing is coming to Scotland for some time but I am concerned that, with just over seven weeks before the offence date, there are still companies who are not adequately prepared.”

The licensable sectors in Scotland from the 1st of November are:

– Door supervision (in-house & contract)
– Security guarding (contractors)
– Cash & valuables in transit (contractors)
– Public space surveillance CCTV (contractors)
– Close protection (contractors)
– Key holders (contractors)

Fines under the Private Security Industry Act 2001 can reach GB pound 5,000.
