Songs about security: Stone Roses and Northern Soul
The first track is the Stone Roses’ Breaking Into Heaven, performed live. I picked it myself because I thought the title was in reference to a pretty audacious attempt to breach the defences of a pretty sought-after location. What sort of intruder detection would be appropriate for heaven? Possibly some sort of thermal gear, what with all the burning sulphur etc from down below.
It’s from their slightly disappointing second album, and Reni had left the drum stool by the time they toured the album (and by the time this video was recorded) – and Ian Brown’s vocals, not unexpectedly, are a little ropier live than on record – but it’s still pretty thrilling, not least for John Squire’s guitar pyrotechnics.
The other pick is Northern Soul legend Eddie Holman’s She’s Wanted In Three States, performed live at Stafford. I4S’s Fiona Flynn insisted I include this. Her justification was that being wanted in three states constitutes some kind of security threat – or something like that.
Dancing styles have certainly evolved over the years – and there are a wide range of audience outfits for your viewing enjoyment. Have a look.
And don’t worry – if you’ve suggested videos in the past week, there is still every chance they will be used in future editions of Songs About Security. I plan to keep this going a long, long time. So keep your ideas coming. And remember, they stand a better chance of being picked if you include some sort of justification for their security connection.
