Terrorists using Internet for recruitment: GK Pillai
“Terrorist used Internet tools as medium of communication in the Mumbai attack plan. Nowadays, Internet has become one of the most potent recruitment tool for extremists and terrorists,” said GK Pillai, Union Home Secretary in New Delhi on Monday.
“The government is reviewing and updating the national cyber security strategy to improve data security,” Pillai said at a conference on the challenge posed by cyber crimes organised by NASSCOM’s Data Security Council (DSCI) and Delotte.
He said government has envisaged a crisis management plan and created a national computer emergency response team CERT-IN, which is the national nodal agency in the cyber security and also works with international partners.
India’s First Cyber Crime Investigation Manual
As a first step towards setting up of procedures and strategies, Deloitte, along with Nasscom, and its technology security arm, DSCI released India’s First Cyber Crime Investigation Manual. The manual aims to bring a uniform and scientific approach in investigating these crimes and brining them to court of law. Based on best practices and the latest technologies for fighting Cyber Crime throughout the world, the manual was formally released by Pillai.
The manual covers a comprehensive list of Cyber Crime topics including procedures for pre-investigation, evidence collection, and handling evidence. It will be a valuable resource in any field investigation, because it provides clear guidance to investigating officers on the procedures to be followed at crime scenes where digital media is present.
Som Mittal, President, NASSCOM, said, “India’s status as a destination of choice for global outsourcing owes to the well-established security practices with organisations. NASSCOM in association with DSCI has set up Cyber Labs in Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore and Thane to train Law Enforcement Agencies for speedier trial of cyber crimes.”
Dr. Kamlesh Bajaj, CEO, DSCI commented on the need for the manual, “NASSCOM and DSCI have a major stake in handling cyber crimes. With this manual, we hope to establish effective standard operating procedures for the Law Enforcing Agencies, taking into consideration our legal framework, to curtail the growing rate of cyber crimes in the country.”
