The objective is to make the relevant BS/EN specifications more accessible to the non-specialist, and provide a grading scheme for access control systems of differing security levels. The new guide will be available in hard copy format, and will also be posted on the BSIA’s website. The guide was launched at an access control seminar held at the IFSEC Exhibition at the NEC, Birmingham. The seminar included a series of technical presentations covering a host of topics related to access control – including a case study based on a technically-challenging installation at the UK offices of Oracle.
Further presentations concentrated on a ‘technical insider’s view’ of biometric technology, and the techniques available in the entrance technology field aimed at enforcing the ‘one person, one card’ rule.
For the future, there will be continuing liaisons with other specifying organisations to see if the ‘Guide for Specifiers of Access Control Systems’ can be adapted to suit security professionals specialising in other fields.
SMT readers should note that copies of all the presentation papers delivered at the access control seminar are available direct from the BSIA’s Events Department. Telephone 01905 727711 for details.
