The Security Institute’s Wilf Knight Award 2010: call for entries
The Wilf Knight Award was launched by The Security Institute back in 2008 to honour the memory of Wilf Knight, a hugely respected Fellow of the leading organisation for professional security managers and directors who sadly passed away earlier that year.
The inaugural award was bestowed at last year’s Security Excellence Awards, the winner being Danie Adendorff.
Indeed, following the success of last year’s award – Adendorff has since gone on to collect the Security Association’s Award element of The Imbert Prize courtesy of the Association of Security Cosnultants – The Security Institute firmly believes that the uptake this time around will be even higher “and confer deserved recognition on both the student who wins the prize, or becomes a finalist, and the institution who nominates them.”
The subject of the dissertation or project work submitted must be coursework, and may be a title of the student’s own choosing or may have been given by the teaching establishment itself.
Essential information on the 2010 Wilf Knight Award
As a refresher, the basic details for the 2010 Wilf Knight Award are as follows:
- an entry must be by a student on a recognised degree course in the general field of security management (this includes related subject areas such as civil emergency planning, crime prevention or criminology, defence, fraud management, risk studies and business continuity… all of which are examples of the diversity allowed within the award criteria).
- minimum level of study: first degree with the submission supported by the university or training provider
- only one entry is allowed for any given institution
- the entry must be part of the coursework of the student concerned
- work submitted should be a dissertation or project which shows evidence of particular distinction and/or innovation in relation to the subject area, and must be seen to “make a valuable contribution to the development of security management”
- author students need not be members of The Security Institute
The overall prize-winner will receive GB pound 500, while all finalists receive a Certificate of Commendation from the Institute.
The winner receives his/her Wilf Knight Award at the 2010 Security Excellence Awards, and is invited to the Black Tie ceremony as a guest of The Security Institute (with the Institute’s table hosted by SMT Online’s Editor Brian Sims).
All nominated entries (which must be in electronic format) should be submitted to The Wilf Knight Award Judging Panel using the following e-mail address: [email protected]
All entries have to be submitted on or before 11 September 2010.
Final judging will be completed on 1 October and the finalists selected
Call for Entries
This year, the Wilf Knight Award is being co-ordinated by Garry Evanson of The Security Institute’s Academic Board.
Speaking directly to the UK’s key educational institutions and training bodies, Evanson said: “I do hope that you have many eligible entries among your students, and that you are able to nominate a strong contender from one of your degree courses.”
He added: “If your institution has several faculties which cover the various related facets of the security management discipline please would you be so kind as to raise awareness of the Wilf Knight Award among your colleagues. This may perhaps produce a larger pool from which to choose the one entry allowed per institution.”
Anyone with any questions or who wishes to discuss the Wilf Knight Award in more detail should either contact Gary direct or The Security Institute’s general manager Di Thomas at head office in Nuneaton.
Gary Evanson is head of banknote security at De La Rue Currency, and can be contacted on e-mail at: [email protected]
