“Ultra shallow” foundation bollard system introduced by Tata Steel

The company claims that, with a structural depth of only 75 mm, the new security solution is the most shallow PAS 68-tested foundation bollard system available in the world.

The Tata Steel USF bollard system is designed to protect high profile sites from vehicle-borne attack, and in particular those locations where people gather together in numbers (such as shopping centres, sports stadiums, airports and railway stations).

The system can be purchased separately for a stand-alone installation or may be specified as part of a larger scheme involving several elements of a complete site security plan.

According to Tata Steel, the prime purpose of the new shallow design is to avoid re-routing local underground utilities which otherwise may need to be disturbed if deeper foundations are used.

This shallow foundation means that excavation time is reduced and local disruption minimised. Speed of installation of the system is one of its main benefits – up to 20 bollards per hour can be installed depending upon ground conditions.

Product testing to PAS 68:2010

The product has been tested to PAS 68:2010 standards, which in this case involved the system stopping a 7,500 kg truck impacting at 90 degrees at speeds of 64 kph and 80 kph.

The base plate and the connection arrangement have been designed to ensure “maximum integrity” of the system without the need for deeper foundations.

System design also means that it should be able to be installed with the minimum of preparation in locations where ground conditions are uneven, as the connectors enable the base plates to adapt to different gradients and, in turn, ensure that the bollards are fitted and aligned correctly.

In addition, the design of the connectors means that, should the need arise, individual bollard assemblies can be removed and replaced without the need to cut and repair reinforcement that is common to other bollard foundation systems.

The USF bollard system from Tata Steel is the latest addition to the company’s bollard system product line. This comprises several models in different styles and with different foundation arrangements, all of which have been PAS 68 rated.
