The government has sent the remains of explosives found from the site of blast in Varanasi to a forensic laboratory in Agra for examination, said a PTI news agency report.
“As per the latest information that we have received, the investigators have not been able to find out the nature of the explosives. The remains of the explosives have been sent for examination to Agra and a report is expected within a day or two,” said UK Bansal, secretary (internal security) in the Union home ministry.
Bansal said central and state security agencies have not been able to pin-point the involvement of any particular group in the blast.
“As regards involvement of any particular organisation, it is too premature to say now. But we have an e-mail purportedly sent by Indian Mujahideen, which originated in Mumbai and was sent from a Wi-Fi network illegally. After that we have lost threads of the mail.
“Police are on the job to find out whether the mail had actually come from Mumbai or it was spoofed through Mumbai,” he was quoted in the report.
Bansal said there was so far no information about any arrest in the case.
To a question whether the ministry plans to hand over the probe to the National Investigation Agency, Bansal said, “There is no immediate plan to give the probe to NIA.”
A child was dead and over 30 others sustained injuries in a low-intensity blast at a crowded bathing ghat on the river Ganga in Varanasi yesterday, the PTI report added.
