Vision for ‘crime-proof’ products

‘Turning the Corner’ has been published by the Foresight Crime Prevention Panel, part of the Government’s Crime Reduction Programme. Over the last 18 months the Panel has pooled the ideas of businesses, academia, Government and the voluntary sector to look at what might happen in the future, and what needs to be done now.
The report recommends that manufacturers should ‘crime-proof’ all new products, science and technology research funding should address crime reduction and that there must be a national strategy for e-crime.
Home Office minister Charles Clarke feels the report offers new ways of thinking about crime.
Clarke said: "The issue of cyber-crime is one about which this Government is acutely aware. That is why we created a National High-Tech Crime Unit within the NCIS, complete with GB pound 25 million worth of funding to develop a high-tech crime strategy backed by 80 cybercops."
