York Dungeon gets emergency evacuation chairs

Evacuation chairs have been fitted at the York Dungeon following a review of the tourist attraction’s health and safety features.

York’s gruesome prisoners try out its new evacuation chairs

Specialist emergency seating from Evac+Chair International has been fitted in various parts of the dungeon, including the entrance and main evacuation route.

The dungeons, which aim to bring York’s gruesome history to life through shows and exhibits, welcome more than 130,000 visitors a year.

The complex design of the dungeons means that there are numerous floors and staircases which can present difficulties for mobility impaired individuals in the event of an emergency.

The evacuation chair system has been installed to ensure people who may be unable to independently descend staircases, can do so safely in the event of an evacuation.

It may also be used for people with physical disabilities, pregnant women or the elderly.

Dungeon manager, Helen Douglas, said: “Our number one priority is ensuring we deliver memorable experiences to our visitors and that the very highest customer service and health and safety standards are maintained.

“We decided to work with Evac+Chair International because they had been recommended to us by our sister site, Edinburgh Dungeon, who were extremely impressed with their services and the quality of the product.”
