₹78cr Budget Granted for Surveillance and Building of Hyderabad Police Commissionerate

Hyderabad city may soon begin the implementation of CCTV surveillance as the state government has given its nod to the Rs. 58.59 crore budget for the project.

The need for establishing a network of CCTV cameras for the Hyderabad and Cyberabad Police Commissionerates’ surveillance needs was first recommended by the committee headed by Chief Secretary, stated Principal Secretary (Home) Rajiv Trivedi in his order.

Another order passed by the state government approved a budget of Rs. 20 crore for constructing new building for the Hyderabad City Police Commissionerate at Banjara Hills.

A state-of-the-art integrated command and control centre is also going to be housed in the new building which will be integrated with the emergency response systems to help the state police in daily policing operations.

The shortage of skilled workforce for handling the community CCTV project has been a major roadblock in its implementation said Hyderabad Police Commissioner Mahender Reddy.

Even though the law mandating installation of CCTV cameras has been enacted in Hyderabad yet the project has been slow in picking-up pace as not enough trained manpower is available to handle the technology used in CCTV surveillance systems.

“To make Hyderabad a global city with high standards of safety, we decided that CCTVs were important. We got good response from the community and about 10 vendors came forward to implement the project. But there is no proper execution and even deadlines are being missed due to shortage of trained people,” he said.

Mr. Reddy was speaking at the first convocation of the Institute of Perfect Safety and Surveillance.
