Network cameras used to prevent cricket corruption

Axis 214 PTZ network cameras from Axis Communications were commissioned by iCode Systems as part of a year-long upgrade of the stadium’s surveillance system.

The system involved networking 16 existing CCTV cameras using four Axis 241Q (quad) video servers. These convert analogue signals into a digital format for recording and management on iCode’s own i-Catcher Console 3 software solution, which sits on the stadium’s data network infrastructure.

CCTV is now a requirement of the International Cricket Council at all venues hosting international matches. It is used to monitor dressing room doorways as part of a number of measures to prevent corruption at high-level fixtures.

Police are also increasingly requesting more sophisticated surveillance for crowd control at major events like rock concerts, which the stadium also hosts.

Huw Edwards, technical director at iCode Systems said the system was especially valuable to the police.

“The police have used these cameras to provide them with very close up images of individuals committing an offenc,e including securing three arrests following a pitch invasion during one cricket international game held at the Rose Bowl just one month after the new system went live.”

He said that, for some larger events, the system is more likely to be used by the police for predicting and preventing crowd crushing, for example.

“Axis cameras can be easily redeployed to meet these specific needs.”

iCode’s i-Catcher Console 3 aims to provide a complete, scalable surveillance management system, featuring motion detection, alerting and a remote web interface that offers a simultaneous recording and playback facility. Advanced features include ‘loiter detection’ and people counting.

Now that the surveillance system has been networked, The Rose Bowl’s management team can view the stadium remotely via the internet and even from their PDAs outside the ground.

Steve Gorski, managing director, Axis Communications (UK) said, “The Rose Bowl is one of hundreds of organisations that are now realising the benefits of going digital and deploying Axis network cameras to improve surveillance results.”
