State of Physical Access Trend Report 2024

Traffic attendants trial head-mounted cameras

Significantly, the number of contested tickets has also reduced dramatically.

SCS Security design supplied 16 head-mounted cameras to Perth and Kinross Council for their parking attendants, to be used in helping provide corroborative evidence and also to help prevent verbal and physical abuse.

Since the scheme began the parking attendants have been almost universal in their praise, and have noted a particular decline in the amount of verbal criticism from motorists. The system also helps drivers to settle any parking disputes they may have.

Huge potential
The head-mounted system has already been used with great success by Tayside Police for use in gathering evidence, and SCS Security Design believes the application for parking attendants offers huge potential throughout the UK.

Malcolm Strachan of SCS Security Design, said: “The parking attendants like the system and it makes their job a lot easier. We have been very pleased by the positive feedback received.”

Richard Valentine, parking superintendent for Perth & Kinross Council Parking Services, said: “The equipment is light and easily carried. The parking attendants got used to wearing it very quickly and it is not at all obtrusive as they go about their duties.

“The equipment has been of great benefit to us with regard to the investigation of official complaints from members of the public regarding employee behaviour or service delivery, most of which have proven to be completely unfounded as verified by the video data.”

Corroboration possibilities
The system comprises a camera unit that is small enough to be worn on the side of the head. It is linked to a small portable video recorder, with recording management software.

Valentine said: “Before the use of this equipment, it was more difficult to investigate customer complaints due to lack of corroboration.

“Instances of verbal abuse, which were quite prevalent, have almost ceased. Since we have introduced this equipment I have had no ‘Violence and Aggression’ report forms from our employees with regard to any on-street incidents involving drivers, contractors or general passers-by. Procurement of this equipment has benefited us greatly.”
