SMT SELECT News: Edition 38 (April 2011)
At present, the industry’s news grapevine is necessarily dominated by what’s happening at the Security Industry Authority and the Home Office.
With the Regulator having recently been removed from the Public Bodies Bill, the $64,000 question is: what happens next?
Thankfully, the Security Industry Authority’s CEO Bill Butler afforded me an exclusive interview on the matter. Read Part One, Part Two and Part Three and learn all you need to know about the change framework.
SIA chairman Baroness Ruth Henig has also made an official statement on the coalition Government’s decision, as have the Security Alliance and the International Professional Security Association.
Tackling criminality at the local level
Soon after ACPO president Sir Hugh Orde spoke at length about a blueprint for policing in the 21st Century, Baroness Helen Newlove produced a thorough report on how crime and criminality might be better tackled at the local level.
As far as criminal justice minister Nick Herbert’s concerned, the “democratic deficit” in UK policing cannot be allowed to continue.
In addition, the latest CMI report strongly suggests that a ‘blinkered’ approach to crisis planning is endangering British businesses.
Education and training blogs
In the current instalment of The Training Platform – one of two regular education and training blogs we now run on info4security.com and SMT Online – Ken Livingstone and Amy Burrell examine why training for all grades of security personnel in the organisation is so vitally important.
In the digital security sphere, ASIS UK has been approved as an Associated Partner of the SSEDIC Thematic Network for Universal eID project run by the European Commission. You can also watch some video of the 2010 Mervyn David Award presentation ceremony.
Along similar lines, the next generation of integrated security systems has been expanded upon by Dave Pickles, UK managing director of Siemens Building Technologies Security Solutions.
Elsewhere in the systems environment, Codestuff has helped Manchester Airport’s management team upgrade to a digital surveillance solution, Infinova has joined the HDcctv Alliance and the Xeno XDR4 DVR range is now available through Norbain.
There’s a new smart card reader courtesy of CEM Systems, and why not check out the XProtect NVR developed by Milestone Systems?
Speaking of networked security solutions, Samsung has just launched its full HD WiseNet2 DSP chipset-based networked camera range.
