Hotel fire safety: 11 tips for protecting guests and property

Open round the clock with guests asleep for a third of the day, hotel fire safety is one of the biggest areas of concern for the fire service and fire safety professionals.

Euralarm recently urged EU policymakers to review legislation governing fire safety in hotels across Europe. The organisation says the existing legal framework – the 1986 EU Council Recommendation on fire safety in hotels – is ill-equipped to meet the needs of tourists who increasingly opt for “smaller hotels rather than big chains” and the “relatively unregulated development of” Airbnb.

Last year the UK’s oldest hotel went up in flames. Thankfully there were no casualties but fire safety consulant Alan Cox asked how a fire that started in an adjacent building could have spread and caused so much damage to the Royal Clarence Hotel in Exeter.

Vulcan Fire Training, fire safety training specialists, have been educating the hotel industry for 25 years and below detail 11 tips for protecting guests, staff and property.

Vulcan’s aim is to help inform the hotel industry regarding fire safety and hope that these design-focused messages can help create safer environments for employees and guests alike.
