A secondary school has reopened after a fire forced the building to close last week.
Pupils were evacuated from Dowdales secondary school in Dalton-in-Furness, Cumbria on Friday (16 September) after the fire was reported in the food technology unit of the building, shortly after 2pm.
Thirty firefighters tackled the blaze, which spread to the roof of the school. The fire was under control at around 3.45pm but firefighters remained at the scene for a further 45 minutes to assess the roof damage.
Dowdales Secondary School has a total of 1,064 pupils aged 11-16. All schoolchildren were taken home or to a nearby leisure centre after the incident.
Two members of staff at the school were taken to hospital and later released.
Cumbria County Council said early indications suggest the blaze may have been caused by a tumble dryer.
Julie O’Connor, headteacher at Dowdales, said: "Whilst this has been a difficult afternoon the evacuation went very smoothly, with students and staff working together to ensure everyone’s safety.”
Fire investigation officers are looking into the cause of the incident.
