Every year Panasonic UK takes on a number of university students to fill different positions within the company as part of a placement year of their education. This year, they are Lucy Crosland, the new marketing and PR assistant and Sam Peers, the new national marketing assistant – who have both been getting their heads around the move from analogue to IP and learning all about Panasonic’s i-Pro Smart HD range of CCTV cameras. Olly Tutcher has taken on the role of PR assistant and is working across a number of product ranges including the Toughbook, DECT phones and broadcast cameras.
Talking to info4security about their experiences, they said: “As newcomers to the security industry, we quickly realised how constricted our views were. Our thoughts on security could be described by some people as uneducated, displaying little knowledge about the depth of the industry.
“We understood that Panasonic was a globally renowned company, but we didn’t appreciate the variety of products that it manufactured.
“To us, security meant CCTV cameras with guards watching TVs at reception and patrolling corridors at night, simple technology, displaying still, black and white images, nightclub bouncers being intimidating and angry men chasing skaters away from the front of office blocks. We also thought that cameras never actually noticed you specifically, that they were ‘just there in case’.
“However, since joining Panasonic a few weeks ago, it has quickly become apparent that security is far more than what you see on the surface. The technology used is incredibly complex, containing features people don’t expect, such as face recognition and HD. The scope of the security industry is huge.
“We have all agreed that we now notice security cameras a lot more, realising that they observe our every movements. As well as this, I’m sure with time we will become obsessed with checking to see if the cameras around us are made by Panasonic.
“We also never thought we would be writing a press release for security cameras!”
