Whitepaper: Enhancing security, resilience and efficiency across a range of industries

10 Security Stories of the Week

1. Specialist Services Section “a welcome addition” to the BSIA

The BSIA has brought together its Civil Aviation Security, Security Consultancies, and Close Protection Sections to form a dedicated Specialist Services Section.

The Specialist Services Section consists of members that can assist security buyers with specialist and challenging requirements both in the UK and internationally across services including technical surveillance counter-measures, IT forensics, cyber security, close protection, and security consulting.

2. Is a Trade Association any use?

Across the years there have been many discussions over the relative merits of Trade Associations and industry bodies. The latest opinion on this issue comes from consultant Chris Lawrence CSyP.

Take a look at the tremendous lobbying work carried out by the BSIA in respect of, for example, industry regulation. Then examine the Register of Chartered Security Professionals and the push for Chartered status by The Security Institute, or the many standards formulated by ASIS.

Are Trade Associations or professional industry bodies any use? For me, the answer is categorically: “Yes.”

3. UK intelligence bosses quizzed by MPs

Late last week, GCHQ director Sir Iain Lobban spoke at the first open Intelligence and Security Committee evidence session alongside Andrew Parker (MI5’s director general) and Sir John Sawers, chief of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6).

This session represented the first time that TV cameras and members of the press had been allowed in to bear witness.

Watch the session on Parliament TV.

4. Security Systems and Engineers: ‘Ready for 4G?’

Over the next couple of years, 4G-based technology is going to become more widespread and provide clients with better security.

That being the case, security installers/integrators should look into what the new network could do for their business and their customers’ businesses.

To take advantage of the opportunities presented by 4G, it follows that staff must be fully trained and prepared.

5. Policing minister announces GB pound 20 million funding for PCCs

Policing minister Damian Green has established a GB pound 20 million fund for Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs) to help pay for implementing new ideas.

Initially, the Government stated that a Police Innovation Fund (worth up to GB pound 50 million per annum) would be set up from 2014-2015. Now, GB pound 20 million will shortly be made available as a “precursor” fund.

PCCs will be able to bid for money to pay for proposals that have the potential to improve policing still further. Those proposals might include, for example, ideas around investment in digital technologies.

6. ‘Invisible criminals’ set to replace people as biggest perpetrators of fraud

Computers, rather than conmen, are set to be the future face of fraud as criminals turn to robotics in an effort to avoid detection.

According to the latest report from KPMG, organisations are set to battle against so-called “seeker bots” defined as self-learning and self-replicating Artificial Intelligence that will render the faces of criminals invisible.

KPMG’s “Profile of a Fraudster” report is based on the analysis of nigh on 600 fraudsters investigated by the firm between 2011 and 2013.

7. The Security Institute seeking new managing director

The Security Institute’s Board of Directors is looking to recruit a managing director for the organisation.

The appointee will provide strategic direction for the Institute. They’ll be responsible for business generation and successful financial and commercial performance.

8. “Co-ordination is key to cyber security” states KPMG

Reacting to Home Secretary Theresa May’s comments about the effect that independence for Scotland would have on cybersecurity, KPMG’s Stephen Bonner focuses on the need for global collaboration to ensure online security.

Bonner comments: “There are no borders on the Internet and citizens and companies will continue to be faced by the growing threat of cyber crime and cyber espionage. However, just as the UK is bringing together law enforcement response to cyber threats via the National Cyber Crime Unit, it will be critical to ensure that the response to these threats remains co-ordinated.”

9. Campsite Security: Showsec at Download 2013

One very specialist element of security and Health and Safety management at outdoor music festivals is that which revolves around the campsite (or, in the case of Download Festival 2013, all nine of them).

These campsites more or less encircled Donington Park — the famous old racetrack in the heart of the East Midlands — between June 14 and 16.

Certain items aren’t allowed on the campsites. These include blow torches, camp fire materials, glass, gas cookers, and gas cylinders as well as any petrol-fuelled stoves, all of which could easily present a safety risk.

10. ABI reaches agreement with SAFE to run the ABI Academy

The Association of British Investigators (ABI) has reached an agreement with training company SAFE for it to run the ABI Academy.

The Academy — which will provide access to ABI-approved training and IQ qualifications in response to the emerging requirements for Security Industry Authority (SIA) licensing and other ABI training initiatives — is designed to provide an effective platform for the educational activities of the ABI.
