Asia-Pacific Countries to Acquire Surveillance Planes for Patrolling Territorial Waters

Several Asia-Pacific Countries to Acquire Planes for Patrolling Territorial WatersSeveral Asia-Pacific countries are buying fewer warships and fighter jets in favour of acquiring surveillance planes instead.

Fuelled by the need of protecting territorial waters from invasion it is hoped the move will limit the maritime disputes which arise from Asian countries’ inability to monitor remote stretches of their territorial waters.

The South China Sea, where China is constructing seven artificial islands with the aim of gaining strategic edge in the territory, has been a particular cause of concern.

In fact, by the time neighbouring countries were even aware of the plan Chinahad already built about half of the artificial islets. Regional military commanders are of the opinion that investment in surveillance planes will help enhance the intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), preventing a recurrence of such incidents in the future. Aerospace companies such as Boeing Co and Sikorsky Aircraft Co are vying to get a share of the growing demand for surveillance planes in Asia.

One such aircraft, the P-3C Orion, has been used by the US Navy for maritime surveillance and is capable of producing such precise results with its high-resolution cameras that even a person could be identified on a ship’s deck.

Even though defence spending in Asia has been on the rise, capacity building in monitoring hasn’t been accorded much attention in the past. However, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam are among the countries now actively exploring ways to scale up their existing surveillance systems.
