Research and development is never-ending and trial and error are the watchwords when it comes to finding next groundbreaking technological innovation.
Many technological breakthroughs happen entirely by accident, including X-Rays, penicillin and the microwave oven.
Scientists in Switzerland recently found inspiration in nature (as inventors often have), namely the bombardier beetle, which ejects a corrosive substance on its attackers. Applying this natural defence to industrial technology they developed a hot foam mixture to be ejected within ATMs that are cracked or broken in attempted thefts, thus rendering the cash worthless.
Implementing a range of strategically tested crime prevention methods ultimately boils down to a well-designed system and the designers’ knowledge of what’s possible.
Testing theories and system efficiency is crucial to the development stages before any installation commences. In particular, as far as building design’s concerned, simulations are a vital part of the process if all possible threats are to be accounted for. The security industry is increasingly adopting this strategy.
Rene Rieder, associate at ARUP, is due to present an ‘Overview of system design tools’ on 19 June in the Convergence Solutions Theatre at IFSEC International, ExCeL London.
Rieder will examine why the security sector has been slow in making the transition from 2D design to 3D building information modelling (BIM). However, the sector is now making steps towards designing surveillance systems using this method, which has revolutionised the simulation of camera views. There’s much more to come in the next three to five years.

Implementing new systems involves significant time, cost and resource. Therefore, the investment new technology receives must afford 100% functionality, the highest reliability and consistent performance when installed and commissioned.
As buildings become more sophisticated, it’s increasingly difficult to integrate security solutions with the building layout and day-to-day operations of the host business.
Taking up this subject, John Davies (Managing Director, TDSi), Jim Ludwig (Managing Director, Texecom), Ian Moore (Managing Director, Elmdene) and Mark Tibbenham (Managing Director, GJD) will take part in a panel discussion called ‘Functionality, Reliability, Performance: security solutions for smarter buildings’.
The session runs on 17 June in the Smart Buildings Theatre at IFSEC International 2014.
Complex security systems can impact building sustainability. Simon Whitehouse, group director at the SGW Consulting Group will discuss ‘Sustainability and building intelligence: key elements of effective security design’ on 18 June in the Smart Buildings Theatre at IFSEC International.
Whitehouse will analyse how sustainability and building intelligence are key elements of effective security design that can be achieved by selecting cost-effective, energy efficient and ‘smart’ building security solutions.
In his session Whitehouse will also examine how the application of sustainable practices and systems within the planning, design, development and daily operations of each project can help create an intelligent and smart building security platform.
Onsite education at IFSEC International is world class and experts in their field will be discussing best practice based on their own abundant experience.
Taking place from 17-19 June 2014 at ExCeL London, IFSEC International is part of Protection & Management 2014.
