The Video Surveillance Report 2022

Dubai Now Under Blanket Surveillance by CCTV Cameras

The length and breadth of Dubai, the most populous city-state in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), is now under CCTV surveillance, a top police official has claimed.

“I can assure you we have the whole city covered,” says Lt Colonel Nasser Ibrahim Kazim, director of the International Centre for Security and Safety at the Dubai Police Academy.

The ability of police to track criminals has been strengthened by an increase in the numbers of CCTV cameras from 600 to 3,000 in Dubai Airport alone.

“We have expanded our systems and we have set surveillance cameras up in any new area that has been developed around the city,” Kazim added.

Lt Col Kazim was speaking after police captured a thief who is alleged to have stolen AED35m ($9.5m) worth of gems, after tracking him throughout the city via surveillance camera.

While he did not disclose the outlay made on the latest CCTV deployment, Kazim said there should be no price on keeping the city safe.

“We need to constantly review our policies and technologies in the light of any regional and global security situations – and do what is needed to keep our city safe. How much we pay is not important compared with security and safety.”
