In the wake of the recent terror attack in Punjab an additional security check has been introduced for airline passengers by the Bureau of Civil Aviation and Security.
Passengers will now be screened just before boarding or exiting the aircraft. The new procedure has been named as the secondary ladder point security check (SLPSC) in which passengers are randomly screened by airline staff in case they witness any suspicious activity on the aerobridge.
The new procedure, which comes in response to the police station siege in the Gurdaspur district of Punjab that left 10 dead, applies to all domestic and international airports.
“The additional security measure comes in handy in case of flight diversion,” said a senior AAI official. This check will supplement the routine security check a passenger undergoes at the terminal.
“In any case the security is always beefed up in case of an alarming incident like a terrorist attack,” said officer on special duty, AAI, SK Narain.
The intelligence agencies have also been instructed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to step-up their vigil in both domestic and international airports. “The sleuths may be in their civvies. So, you never know that the person around you is a cop,” said a senior official.
Additional security staff has also been roped in by the AAI to assist the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel.
