Healthcare, Aviation and Military Driving Burgeoning Demand for Thermal Cameras

The global market for thermal cameras is expected to touch £34bn by 2020.

The figure comes from a report from Grand View Research, which highlighted the military as the sector investing most heavily in the technology in 2013.

Declining defence spending may have lowered growth prospects over the next six years, however, says the report.

But while global defence spending did fall for the first time in 15 years in 2012, reductions in the West are increasingly offset by rising spending in China and other emerging economies, while the bellicosity of Vladimir Putin and the ISIS crisis is even giving European leaders pause for thought over spending reductions.

Also known as infrared (IR) cameras thermal imaging  has also been deployed in airports to screen passengers with elevated body temperatures during Ebola and other outbreaks.

Thermal cameras are also finding applications beyond security, with the study predicting a surge in demand in medical imaging applications.

IR cameras are also increasingly popular in automotive and oil and gas, particularly in the Asia Pacific region.

And falling prices could make his hitherto high-end purchase affordable for a wider range of sectors still. High demand for IR cameras across several emerging market segments including food service and distribution, healthcare and screening, veterinary science, automotive care, maritime vessel inspections and aircraft inspection offer further opportunities for market growth.

With major industry participants, North America is seen as the key regional market for growth. Furthermore, thermal-focused video surveillance cabling and infrastructure is forecasted by Grand View Research to drive regional market growth.

Major companies operating in the market include FLIR Systems, Axis Communications, Samsung Techwin, Fluke Corporation, and Testo AG.

Temperature tolerance, ruggedness and reliability drive demand in this sector, says Grand View Research.
