Security perspectives 2024: Vincent Lomba of Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise

With growing anti-social behaviour, staff shortages, increasing regulations as well as continued difficult traditions conditions, 2024 promises to be another challenging year for the fire and security industries. In this short interview series, I talk to six industry leaders from different backgrounds about the main issues they face as we head into 2024.

In the first interviews I spoke to Jamie Allam, CEO of installation and integration firm Amthal Fire & Security, Spencer Marshall, Head of Europe at HID Global and Sarb Sembhi, CTO of cybersecurity firm Virtually Informed and Kieran Mackie of Amulet Security.

In this interview I speak to Vincent Lomba, Chief Technical Security Officer at Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise

“Our business is selling unified communication network infrastructure both on premises and in the cloud. And although we are not specialists in cybersecurity we have deeply changed our mindset over the last four years, integrating a cybersecurity element into every product we are selling.

When there is a vulnerability announced by the community, we have dedicated processes to handle it and provide our customers with remediation solutions if necessary. Whereas once we would only occasionally have seen dedicated security chapters in RFPs (Request for Proposals), now 90% of companies have strict requirements we have to comply with regarding cybersecurity.

Driven by regulation such as NIS2 which comes into effect next year, cybersecurity has become a mature market. The next step is how AI will influence the marketplace. For me, the effects will be both good and bad.

Bad because of the easiness of writing methodologies to perform an attack as well as the ability to collect a lot of information to detect all the weaknesses of an organisation. Good because it will enable enterprises to anticipate an APT (Advanced Persistent Threat) by performing a fully dynamic real time analysis of the logs and detect any abnormal behaviour.

In France we have 75% market share of all the hospitals. These are a prime target for hackers who want to create a denial of service and leak electronic patient records. While ransomware such as CryptoLocker is the main type of malware used by hackers, it is often hides another motive such as exerting political influence. So it’s not always just about money.”
