Standards and certifications, is the current system fit for purpose? Live panel debate

Representatives from the BSIA, BSI, NSI and ASIS International will debate the suitability of security standards and certifications at IFSEC International 2016.

The standards panel, taking place on 21st June, draws together key industry-knowledge and experience. The chair is Dr Allison Wylde, International Commissioner with the ASIS International Commission on Standards and Guidelines. The panellists include Ms Beverley Webb, Lead Programme Manager, the British Standards Institution, Mr David Wilkinson Director of Technical Services at the British Security Industry Association and Mr Tony Weeks, Head of Technical Services at the National Security Inspectorate (NSI).

This discussion is sure to be lively given the important role of standards and governance for modern organisations; the panel aims to cover standards, certification and the future – in this time of potential challenges and successes.

Commencing with standards, this segment will cover how standards are created and maintained. It will provide examples of different types of standards and how they are used in our industry. The panel will also address the issue of national occupational standards and how they fit / or not within the standards regime. In this segment the panel will also consider how standards benefit the manufacturer, service provider and user and how can we improve standards to meet customers need – embracing change?

The certification segment will look at different types of certification, product, system and service along with how certification is used for learners and training providers and how certification is used in our industry. Finally the panel will consider questions such as ‘is certification a help or a hindrance?’ and ‘how do standards and certification work together?’.

In the final segment the panel will explore the future asking; ‘What next?’ ‘What are the potential challenges?’ and ‘What success lies ahead’?
