Great Fire of London monument reopens

[

The memorial to the Great Fire of London in 1666 reopened this week after the completion of an 18-month refurbishment which cost around GB pound 4.5m, and is now protected by a wireless detection system.

The structure – said to be the tallest unsupported column in the world – has had its stonework cleaned and is now equipped with a new viewing platform balustrade and cage, new ‘talking’ telescopes, and a spectacular re-gilded ‘flaming’ orb representing the fire itself. The height of the structure – at 202 feet (around 62 metres), represents the distance between it and Pudding Lane, where the Great Fire is believed to have started.

What’s more, the structure is now protected – appropriately enough from fire – by a wireless detection system from EMS Group. The FirePoint 5000 system was installed by MPE Alarms and consists of a main fire panel, combined fire sensor/sounder units and call points. The installation means the Monument will be protected from fire without the 100,000+ visitors that climb the steps each year seeing any wiring.

Ian Luder, Lord Mayor of the City of London, said: “I am delighted that the Monument has been restored, repaired and protected for future generations and can now, once again, welcome visitors. Whether they come to admire Wren’s work, or enjoy the panoramic views from the top or the contrast between the old and new in the City at street level, visitors have always been drawn to the Monument.”
