For his part, Sir Paul Stephenson received a huge round of applause for a superb 17-minute polemic on how the police service is going to deal with public spending cuts, the ongoing fight to counter the terrorist threat, the 2012 Olympics and how, going forward, private sector security providers and the police can work together for the common good.
