According to the head of the Examination Officers’ Association (EOA), which represents exam administrators, the technology is needed to keep up with increasingly resourceful candidates who use mobile phones and mini recording devices to cheat in tests.
“There is a growing problem of security and we’re trying to come to terms with that,” said EOA chief executive Andrew Harland.
Harland said CCTV could also help in situations where students claim the wrong instruction was given, and when invigilators face false accusations.
“CCTV would work, both for officers and for the students, in alleviating problems of accusations and speculation,” he said.
Harland claimed using cameras is arguably less intrusive for candidates than being stared at, which could put them off their work.
Deterrent
Following a successful pilot scheme involving its members, the EOA has asked for volunteers to carry out trials, which could start as soon as this summer.
John Dunford, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, told The Times that the extra checks were necessary because invigilators increasingly do not know the students they are watching.
“If a pupil knows CCTV cameras are around, it’s like slowing down for a speed camera on a main road – it acts as a deterrent,” he said.
According to reports the EOA is currently in talks with Classwatch, a company that already supplies dozens of schools with high-tech surveillance equipment.
