Chennai ATMs to get vandal-proof cameras soon

Chennai police have advised banks to install a vandal-proof camera, intended to resist vandalism and make sure that it will continue to operate even if burglars attempt to break it or impair its function.

In a meeting with 45 representatives of various banks at the city commissionerate in Vepery, police said 85 per cent of banks have already installed CCTVs in their ATMs. They have also asked bank representatives to ensure that the cameras are all in working condition.

They have also been advised to strengthen the security at night and provide proper illumination surrounding the banks and the parking lot as the city is witnessing a spurt in burglary cases. “We have asked them to ensure that they conduct security audit and install CCTVs both outside the banks and the parking lots,” said a senior police officer. Banks have been asked to inform the police in case they witness any suspicious movement outside ATMs.
