State of Physical Access Trend Report 2024

Fashion house using mini cameras to deter theft

Up to 25 of the tiny devices were installed at each outlet following consultation with Italian installer New Elettric.

To relay the images to onsite control rooms, New Elettric’s Paolo Stagni turned to Milan-based integration firm Videoline.

Space within the shops is limited, ruling out any sort of coax-based solution. Videoline decided that image transmission would have proved too cumbersome and the installation process could have damaged lavishly decorated shop fronts.

As a result, Videoline and New Elettric specified Network Video Technologies’ (NVT) unshielded twisted pair (UTP) video transmission technology to distribute visual information from each camera back to the control room.

NVT said that using its UTP meant little civil work was needed – due to the small size of a UTP cable bundle – and that installation was easier than it would have been for a traditional coax transmission method.

This is said to have resulted in less downtime for the outlets involved and minimal disruption to their day-to-day business.

Marco Lazzaroni, technical manager at Videoline said, “New Elettric required a robust and reliable camera video transmission network.

“Using an NVT-based UTP solution we were able to fulfil the chain’s requirements and be confident in an interference free transmission solution which would relay video signals of the highest quality.”

Stagni said that fashion houses need to change the way their products are displayed, sometimes on a monthly basis.

“This can sometimes compromise camera positioning, requiring relocation or additional cameras,” he said.

“Using NVT UTP means that any relocated or additional cameras required can be easily included in the system by connection to any of the many ‘spare’ pairs that we have included in the system’s UTP cable network.

“If we had used coax, in this scenario we would be forced to install expensive and disruptive additional cable runs.”
