State of Physical Access Trend Report 2024

Gujarat Cops get phone access to city’s CCTV cameras

Top cops in Ahmedabad will now be able to see live footage from CCTV cameras installed in malls, multiplexes and clubs on their cellphones. The move comes in the wake of the recent terror threat issued by al-Qaida. Cops have initiated a move to take administrators of such installations into confidence and link their CCTV coverage to cellphones of senior police officials.

“We have already linked CCTV footage of a restaurant located on SG Road to our cellphones and are trying to connect with cameras installed at other installations too,” said joint commissioner of police, sector-1, Manoj Agarwal.

In the recent communication, al-Qaida had threatened to target cities of Gujarat, including Ahmedabad. “To ensure safety of people, we have decided to personally monitor live footage from CCTV cameras installed in malls, multiplexes and clubs,” said Agarwal. Police officials said that most of the installations use floating IP addresses for recording CCTV footage.

“We will link the floating IP addresses to another server and then with the help of software, will be able to see live footage on our cellphones,” added Agarwal. “Even during patrolling or on move, we could monitor movements inside such locations for safety reasons,” he said.

As of now, the police have 250 cameras installed at different locations in the city. Another 250 cameras will soon be installed to monitor suspicious movements in city area, said police officials
