HDcctv: Who’s in charge of my security?

The transition to IP surveillance is well under way, as a growing number of security customers manage video from PCs, tablets, and smart phones.

At what point in the system does the security professional need to call in the Information Technology department when designing IP capabilities into a security system?

For HD video, the IT department has needed to take over the whole project, extending the local-site IP LAN to every camera mount on the premises.

But now there is a new way: HDcctv.

HDcctv allows MP IP surveillance to be delivered over the internet, while the local-site IP LAN remains confined to a secure control room.

HDcctv is different from both analogue CCTV and from IP transmission.

The three video interface technologies now available for surveillance are compared in this summary: http://bit.ly/hloVt5.

Security installers have a new opportunity to conveniently bring high-quality video evidence to the internet via HDcctv-compliant DVRs.

This is the first in a four-part mini-series that connects the dots between HDcctv and IP surveillance.

Shifting balance of power in corporate struggle for control of HD surveillance

A modern video surveillance system (VSS) takes advantage of IP networking to integrate disparate components or enable remote control via the internet.

CCTV DVRs and IP streamers provide the vast majority of SD IP surveillance, so the interaction between the VSS designer and the customer’s IT department has mainly been confined to the control room.

HD video, however, has required installing MP IP cameras. As a result, HD video has brought the IT department into VSS design decisions extending beyond the control room, all the way to each camera mount, where the local-site IP LAN is connected to the camera.

HDcctv returns the IT boundary to the secure control room, from which it is relatively easy to get on the internet.

Some IT professionals, perhaps unfamiliar with the ability of a modern DVR to cost-effectively stream high-quality IP video, wonder: “Why isn’t every surveillance camera an IP camera?”

By contrast, experienced security professionals question the wisdom of extending the local-site IP LAN beyond a secure environment.

These contrasting points of view have been a source of conflict in security project planning in corporate environments.

In recent years, IT has won the argument in every project requiring HD video, because MP IP cameras were the only available option.

Now, with HDcctv, security professionals are able to extend the CCTV model to capture unadulterated 720p25, 720p50, and 1080p25 video feeds for subsequent transmission over the internet. Life is simple again!

Turn to HDcctv for high-quality, convenient, affordable MP IP surveillance

HDcctv is set to become the predominant video surveillance interface technology faster than anyone predicted.

Because it is already so easy to integrate DVRs into IP video surveillance systems, the ready availability of HDcctv-compliant DVRs is accelerating the move to MP IP video.

Many HDcctv events are planned for IFSEC, including a series of retrofit seminars. You can sign up at www.highdefcctv.org/signup.

I look forward to seeing you there!
