Understanding video surveillance technologies and products is an important part of every security manager’s job. Now, a free e-book dedicated to making this easy is available. It’s ‘Open Source’, ensuring that any security manager can obtain, read, use and share the information made available by author John Honovich.
The ‘Security Manager’s Guide to Video Surveillance’ provides over 130 pages of original tutorials, research and analysis dedicated to helping security managers better understand and select video surveillance solutions. The book helps security managers in three main ways:
(1) Extensive tutorials explain key technical concepts in a non-technical manner focused on the security benefits of each technology
(2) In-depth analyses of key trends and products allow security managers to learn what is new and where such technologies might be valuable to their organisations
(3) A clear review is included concentrating on how to assess new technologies and ensure that vendors deliver on their promises
The book makes use of a Creative Commons license. Not only is there no charge, but readers may freely use the content in the book for their own non-commercial ends. This allows security managers to share, modify and include this research and analysis in their own presentations, analysis and reports.
Making better informed choices
For many years, John Honovich has worked closely with security managers to design and deploy video surveillance systems for the military, major retailers, banks, commercial and industrial organisations. In this e-book, he leverages his experience as both an integrator and manufacturer to offer highly relevant knowledge gained both from the ‘trenches’ and from analysing new technology. Indeed, Honovich conducted over 300 interviews to compile this publication.
“Quality information on video surveillance for security managers is limited and expensive,” commented Honovich in an exclusive interview with Security Management Today. “Making this book free and open is essential by way of giving something back to the security community and allowing anyone to learn without restrictions. I look forward to updating its contents on a regular basis and ensuring that the book always remains useful and relevant.”
Future editions of the book will be released frequently to ensure that the information is always timely and in accord with ever-changing video surveillance technology.
