State of Physical Access Trend Report 2024

Shift from analogue CCTV to digital and IP tracked in Key Note survey

Market intelligence provider Key Note’s latest report on the CCTV sector estimates that the market was worth GB pound 560 million in 2006 (at end user prices), and is scheduled to have reached GB pound 582 million come the end of last year. These estimated values include the installation, maintenance, design and supply of all equipment, but not the cost of monitoring.

Between 2002 and 2006, construction output of new buildings in Great Britain showed growth in constant price terms, with the massively important private commercial sector experiencing a 20.8% increase in the value of construction of new buildings (in constant price terms) between 2002 and 2006. This has contributed greatly to the continued healthy demand for CCTV systems.

Key Note forecasts continued growth in value as well as volume in the UK market for the design, supply, installation and maintenance of CCTV systems. This will be driven largely by the need to update legacy installations, the requirement for enhanced public security, new construction and the opportunities presented by advances in technology. While equipment prices could continue to fall, there should be a continual move towards higher performance equipment. Inflation will affect the cost of installation.

The most significant trend noted in the report is the continuing shift (both at home and overseas) from analogue to digital and IP-based solutions. Demand for network cameras first began to show strong growth in 2005. That growth continued through the subsequent two-year period.

With IP, existing data networks may be used, allowing the deployment of remote monitoring services and cutting out the need for expensive, dedicated cabling. As new cameras may be added at any point on the system, IP video systems provide great flexibility, offering the end user opportunities to view live footage and recordings from anywhere on the network.
