Abu Dhabi bank launches voice biometrics system

Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank has said it will use voice authentication for customer transactions, saying that it could offer more convenience and security than knowledge-based answers. ADCB will offer voice biometrics in Arabic, English and Hindi, the bank said in a statement – the first such bank to cover these languages.

“Our decision to invest in this new technology was primarily driven by the key objective of enhancing the everyday banking experience for our customers,” said Arup Mukhopadhyay, head of ADCB’s Consumer Banking Group. (Source: Security Today)

The bank’s solution will compare a spoken passphrase with a registered voiceprint. It then authenticates and permits the customer to proceed with the banking transactions. “With voice biometrics, banks have a real opportunity to change their customer experience for the better, while at the same time providing a high level of security,” said Robert Weideman, executive vice president and general manager for the Enterprise Division of Nuance. “Our voice biometrics technology offers a dependable solution for companies like ADCB who truly value customer convenience in a quickly-evolving digital banking environment.”

Last week, an investigative article by the Associated Press reported that the US banks JPMorgan Chas and Wells Fargo were already using use voice screening, also known as voice biometric blacklists. The AP survey of 10 leading voice biometric vendors found that more than 65 million people worldwide have had their voiceprints taken, and that several banks, including Barclays PLC in Britain and Minneapolis-based U.S. Bancorp, are in the process of introducing their customers to the technology.
