The smart buildings report 2017: installed base, benefits and challenges, cyber threat and barriers to adoption

Watch: 5 smart buildings that got hacked

With IT and building control bound ever-more inextricably together, cybersecurity is an unignorable risk for facilities and security managers as well as IT professionals.

Smart or connected buildings undoubtedly bring many benefits – in energy efficiency, operational effectiveness, the comfort of occupants and yes, security in some senses – but it introduces new risks too.

And the threat is not merely speculative, as our video below shows.

Gartner recently predicted that, by 2020, more than 25% of all identified attacks in enterprises will come from the internet of things

We surveyed hundreds of building managers and security professionals about smart buildings and 87% were at least somewhat concerned about the cybersecurity vulnerabilities posed by smart tech, with 43% professing to being ‘very concerned’. Nevertheless, that even 13% insist they are ‘not concerned at all’ might alarm some observers given widespread reports about the vulnerabilities of internet-connected ‘things’.
