Traffic Police in Delhi, India will spend Rs200 Cr on an ‘intelligent’ traffic system over the next one and a half years.
Speaking at Traffic Infra Tech Expo 2015 on Thursday, Anil Shukla, IPS, Joint Commissioner of Traffic Police, Delhi announced plans to purchase around 200 Speed Camera Systems, 100 Red Light Violation Camera Systems and about 200 VMS (Variable Messaging Signboards) in 18 months time.
Shukla told delegates that many international companies were pushing second-grade technology to India, which is not acceptable.
The Delhi traffic police department is looking for cameras for speed violation checks with video analytics functions, with each camera needing to cover at least three lanes on both sides of the road.
India’s capital city became the world’s second most populous city in 2014. Road casualties are among the world’s worst with 2,000 people dying annually, making it imperative to have advanced traffic monitoring systems in place.
While road accidents in many developing countries have dipped even as vehicle sales rose, Indian fatalities have soared by 50% in the last decade.
These project tenders are expected to be floated in the next two months. However, Shukla was disappointed that most companies were disqualified during the tendering process on the grounds that they failed to meet the criteria.
The fourth edition of Traffic Infra Tech Expo was inaugurated by Shankar Aggarwal, Secretary at the Ministry of Urban Development and attracted around 100 exhibitors from about 20 countries across the globe.
