Aiming to enhance the security of female commuters on Delhi’s buses the Aam Aadmi Party government has given its nod to the installation of CCTV cameras on the city’s fleet.
In the first phase the CCTV cameras shall be installed in about 5000 buses.
Complementing the deployment of trained marshals aboard buses the city’s government hopes the move will prevent more tragedies like the 2012 gang rape and murder of a female commuter aboard a Delhi bus.
A provision of about Rs100 crore will be kept aside to execute the project which will include both DTC and orange coloured cluster buses.
At present, about 4,700 DTC buses transport citizens on Delhi’s roads. About 924 standard-floor buses (yellow) will be discontinued as their lifecycle completes.
Another 1300 cluster buses are governed by Delhi Integrated Multi-Model Transit System (DIMTS).
“Government has decided to install CCTV cameras in 5,000 DTC and cluster buses. As per plan, three CCTV cameras will be installed on each bus to keep a close vigil on every passenger,” Transport Minister Gopal Rai told PTI.
The installation of CCTV cameras on buses will help combat the the spike in eve-teasing and violence against women incidents.
“CCTVs will be installed in all DTC low-floor buses, including air conditioned buses. All the 1300 cluster buses (orange) will also come under this project,” the minister said.
