Delta has provided its DLP Video wall for India’s first-ever safe-city project.

Delta, which provides professional displays for control room solutions for surveillance, security, traffic, command and control, utilities, process control, telecoms and broadcast applications, is collaborating with the Surat City Police department, the Surat Traffic Education Trust and Innovative Telecom & Software Pvt Ltd for the Surat Safe City project.

Colloquially known as the Diamond City Surat is one of India’s foremost commercial hubs with a large population and major diamond, textile, engineering, and oil and gas industries.

Gujarat’s second largest city will become the country’s first metropolis to be covered comprehensively by electronic surveillance cameras. To be implemented in five phases the project will deploy a network of 5,000 surveillance cameras across 500 locations covering an area of 150 sq km.

Some 104 CCTV cameras, a command and control centre, a data centre with 200 terabytes of storage and an integrated physical security information management system have already been installed as part of the first phase.

Cameras were installed principally at entry and exit points, at the airport, railway stations, bus stands, main markets and all major traffic junctions.

Based on internet protocol (IP) the cameras will provide real-time surveillance and will be linked via an optical fibre network to a command and control centre at commissionerate headquarters. The office will be equipped with a 280 square foot ‘video wall’ and multiple control consoles.

Each divisional headquarters will also have its own control centre with server and storage capacity of 200 terabytes, which can be increased when required.

The project will also incorporate 2D city mapping technology to coordinate physical security, fire alarm, water levels, excavation plans and disaster recovery, among other elements.

Delta has already deployed its LED Video wall, which is powered with next-generation LEDs, to help Surat Police monitor the city. The LED illumination boasts a brightness output of 1100 lumens and an increase in perceptional brightness – ie more saturated colors – according to the manufacturer.

The video wall is driven by Delta’s Icon Pro controller and wall management software, which will display live coverage from across the city. The display solution can handle data from various sources including a display of the city map.

Surat-based Innovative Telecom & Softwares Pvt. Ltd won an open-bid invitation for the project and enlisted the help of Verint System, IBM and Delta.

The 280-square-foot video wall has been installed in the command and control room of Surat Police Headquarters. With the help of Delta’s Video Wall Solution, Surat Police will now be able to monitor the entire city.

The authorites hope the system will help with traffic management, improve responses to road accidents and help combat the terror threat.

The project was opened by CM of Gujarat, Shri Narendra Modi, who voiced hope that the project would herald an improvement in crime detection rates and a drop in crime.
